ASA Age Groups: Or how we learned to stop worrying and live with Auckland Council

Auckland Swimming Age Groups are on the horizon - March 6 at Westwave!

We've got a bit of a complicated relationship with Westwave to be honest.  Well with Auckland City Council more accurately.

You see, ACC is one of the few Councils around New Zealand that don't allow us poolside at events.  As proud sponsors of Auckland Swimming, the only way we can be there is to not sell anything they consider as competition for their pool shop.

We've actually approached them a few times now to discuss and try to negotiate what they'd find acceptable - as competitive swimmers will tell you, the tech tools and suits they use are not the sort of thing sold over the counter in a leisure pool.  You won't find the latest compression wear, stitch racing gear, racing goggles or training tools there.

And why would you?  It's not who they're designed to cater for and we've offered to make sure nothing we sell is in competition to them, even though for these events the general public are excluded anyway.

Instead, when the inevitable issues arise at an event in any Auckland Council pool, competitive swimmers are put at a disadvantage, often resulting in panicked calls, mad dashes to Mt Eden or Albany or competing in gear not designed to do what the swimmer needs.

Now we're sure Auckland Council don't want to put their swimmers at a disadvantage, not willingly anyway - but unfortunately we can't get them to change their mind.  If you want to let them know though how you feel about this - you can contact them directly here -

We really hope the ASA competitors racing at Age Groups have an amazing time!  Our staff know the pressures of competition after all!  But they also know the rules Auckland Swimming have around what suits you can wear, and how to get the best results, so make sure you pop into to see them in Pakuranga, Mt Eden or up on the Shore before the big competition!

And good luck to everyone taking part, we can't wait to see how you smash it!
